Building Teams --you See It Everywhere

A college football team has it. A corporation has it. Even agrowing family has it. These three organizations share a commondesire to build their prospective teams. For example, a collegefootball team continually needs to bring in new players toreplace the graduating players. A corporation builds its team tohelp it grow and meet the needs of clients. A young marriedcouple who are having children are building their own familyteam. Each of these results has a different outcome. In the end,the goal is to work together, help each other, and collectivelyreach a higher level of performance. Whatever team you arecurrently involved with, it is surprising at how muchorganization is needed to build a great team. Furthermore, thefollowing teams have their own equally important approach as tohow they successfully build their prospective teams.

First of all, let’s focus on a college football team. Unlikeprofessional sports, coaches have roughly a four-year timeperiod to retain their players. After that period, an athlete’seligibility is complete due to graduation. In order to fill thevoid left by graduated players, coaches rely heavily onrecruiting new players to continue building the football team.Coaches look for the best athletes who have the capability tosurpass those athletes before them, so that they can continue awinning team. Coaches face a challenging role to rebuild theirprogram, depending on their previous team’s success. At the endof the football season, coaches must take the initiative tore-build their team each year to fill vacancies so their teamcan move forward again.

During college, I interned for a public relations firm, and onmy first day, my supervisor welcomed me with an e-mail thatread, Welcome to the team! At first, I felt that only organizedathletics reserved the right to use the word team. On a maturelevel, I’ve realized companies stay healthy when they implementa team-like atmosphere in the workplace. Being on a team bringsout motivation and competition in employees, and also helps themto unite, identify their roles on the team, and produce strongerresults. I’ve attended many career sessions and with everyemployer I’ve met, they have emphasized their desire to hirecollege graduates to join their team. Like a college sportsteam, an employer needs to recruit prospective candidates tofulfill roles in their company.

Many companies utilize employees as team members because it is afitting approach when they are competing in an industry. Forexample, popular competing organizations such as Pepsi andCoca-Cola use the team approach in the workplace. The workenvironment at Pepsi might have some teams who are directlycompeting against some rival teams at Coca-Cola. Thiscompetition and approach is healthy because it energizesemployees to become active team members and promoters for theirbrand. As mentioned before, being on a team helps members toidentify their individual roles in the company and along withmotivating them in a competing industry.

You can apply team building skills in any organization. Forexample, universities that are accepting incoming freshmen willwant candidates who will help maintain or even raise theacademic standards for greater respect and reputation of theirschool. Those freshmen are building the university team toimprove performance and image. Finally, a chairman will seek outcandidates to fulfill his board to bring in fresh ideas andinsight to his committee. The chairman is simply building histeam for support. In any circumstance, building teams will builda foundation for any organization that wants to progress andmove forward. With a purpose and vision to improve yourorganization, building your own team and improving teaminteraction will help you achieve outstanding results.
